A big thank you to these members of the Weaubleau TOPS program who packaged hygiene kits and donated them to the Tiger's Closet. TOPS refers to the Teen Outreach Program, which is designed for middle and high school students to build life skills, promote healthy behaviors, and encourage community service. As Mrs. Jeri Hubbert prepares to retire as our Library Media Specialist, we want to thank her for the many years she has dedicated to the students and staff at Weaubleau. Her love for books and learning has made the library a special place for generations of Tigers. We asked Mrs. Hubbert a few questions as she wraps up her time at Weaubleau—check out her answers below!
How many years have you spent at Weaubleau?
28 (39 years total in education)
What led you to become a librarian?
I'm actually a Library Media Specialist: a certified teacher that runs the Library Media Center (a centralized location in a school that provides traditional library services and technology). My teaching certification is in Elementary Education. I became a teacher because I enjoy working with children and helping them to become thoughtful, helpful members of society. About ten years into my career I decided to earn certification as a Library Media Specialist. I became an LMS because I love reading and sharing that love with others, while still having the opportunity to teach.
What accomplishment in your career are you most proud of?
I'd have to say the Weaubleau Library collection is one of the highlights. It's been a lot of hard work, however we currently offer our students access to over 20,000 books in print. I'm also very proud of having the opportunity to work with so many different students; varied backgrounds, skill levels, and ages. It has been a very interesting and enjoyable career.
What has been the most rewarding part of being a library media specialist?
Both as a teacher and LMS, working with the students and watching them grow in understanding through the years has been very rewarding. Just as meaningful however: as the Weaubleau Library Media Specialist I have hosted at least one book fair a year, for 27 out of my 28 years. The Weaubleau community has greatly supported this effort and as a result, the profits from the book fairs have allowed me to give away around 30 books during each book fair, purchase books and other materials for classrooms and the LMC, as well as give Christmas books away to preschool thru second grade students each year. It has been a privilege to help our students; it is very heartwarming to see the reaction of students when they realize that they are receiving a book of their own. One Kindergarten student asked me "You mean I get to keep this book forever and ever?" When I said "Yes, it's all yours." The smile I received was amazing!
What challenges helped shape you as a leader?
My mother was a teacher and a Library Media Specialist, I learned from watching her that things don't always go as you have planned. When I stepped into education as a professional, I learned that lesson from a personal perspective. Jobs can change, plans can change, reporting to the state changes, technology changes (and sometimes just quits!), the one thing that stays constant is that our students need us. I've learned to choose my battles carefully and keep my focus on the students.
What advice would you give to future students?
Whatever you want to accomplish; keep your focus on that, work hard, and remember that you are capable and worthy of good things.
As you retire, what's next for you?
The most important things as I retire are spending more time with family (especially my grandson), completing long ignored projects, and not waking up at 5:15 am!

Nominations are being sought for the "Master Teacher Award". The name and reasons for the nomination should be included in the letter to the Master Teacher Selection Committee, Weaubleau R-3 Schools, 22320 Center St., Weaubleau, MO 65774, or hand delivered to the school board secretary, who will forward the information to the committee.

Last week, Weaubleau hosted the Class 1 District 7 basketball Tournament. It was an awesome week that could not have been pulled off without so many people who stepped in and helped.

Today we want to say a big THANK YOU to the Booster Club and the Optimist Club for the donation they made that allowed us to purchase a new Cricut & heat press! We have had these for a few months now, and it's awesome to have this equipment available to our students, clubs, and staff.
